Hello, my name is Brandi and I have been receiving assistance from Guernsey County Children Services for three years now. I am a single mother of a twelve year-old-son who is autistic and has a multitude of other medical conditions. One of the biggest challenges for me was my son’s behaviors. He was very defiant and unable to control his outburst on a daily basis.
I was a nursing student at the time and had lost three babysitters in a matter of one week. Everyday, I would try to think of ways to help him and wonder what I had
done wrong, and every night I went to bed feeling helpless and crying myself to sleep. It was a horrible feeling knowing how much you love your son but having no idea of how to help him.
One day when I had been called to his school, as usual for him acting up, I spoke with the guidance counselor. I asked her if she knew of any resources I could use or of anything out there to help my son and myself.
That’s when she informed me about Children Services. She said they had many programs and ways to help. The next day I went there and that is a day that changed our lives forever. They helped me find a good babysitter for my son and educated me in ways to deal with his behavioral problems.
Along with many other great services they provided me with, one I could not have done without was my caseworker. Not only was she empathetic and sincere to our needs, but she was friendly and truly cared about helping us. Without her none of this would have been possible.
